Established in 2011, JTD Building Supplies has built a strong reputation serving trade customers across West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester. Always looking for innovative ways to grow, Directors Tony Sharkey and Robert Jagger identified an opportunity to provide ready-mix concrete and mortar directly from their yard.
The primary challenge was space. The team needed to incorporate the new machinery without disrupting existing operations. They identified an underutilised corner of their yard, previously used for storage, as the ideal location.
Working with fibo Intercon, JTD selected the compact F1200 model. Through strategic placement of the cement silo and a custom-built steel frame around the hydraulic conveyor belt, they created a highly efficient and safe batching plant in a minimal footprint.
From the initial discussions in 2023, Directors Tony Sharkey and Robert Jagger, with their extensive operational expertise, recognised the potential. “The key challenge,” they noted, “lies in engaging customers who previously preferred mixing on site. Convincing them to try our solution is the hardest step.”
Ideal for builders, landscapers, and contractors requiring various mixes, from standard concrete to specialist screeds.
The fibo Collect system is designed to meet the needs of contractors looking for a convenient, cost-effective solution for small-scale concrete, mortar, and screed production.
Now just over a year later, JTD’s investment has proven to be a resounding success, driving growth across multiple areas of the business.
In just over one year, JTD has sold over 1,500m³ of material from the machine, they’re currently averaging over 6m³ per day with an average order size of . More importantly, this has been driven by high levels of repeat business.
The fibo Collect machine opened up a significant new opportunity in mortar. The superior quality of the product, combined with an efficient local delivery service featuring special ‘crane offload’ tubs, has been met with an overwhelmingly positive response.
JTD has unlocked a fast-growing new revenue stream with its innovative machine. Among its recipes, the M6 4:1 strength mortar mix has quickly become the second-best seller, only behind C25/30 concrete. Since launch, the machine has already delivered over 300m³ of the mortar mix.
A key differentiator with the Mortar is the machine’s ability to incorporate multi-day retarders with ease, an invaluable USP with mortar collection. This feature allows JTD’s customers to collect materials in advance and use them the following day. For those who call ahead, JTD even prepares and seals tubs for collection, ready on arrival.
The machine has acted as a powerful magnet for new and existing customers. JTD has seen a surge in add-on sales, with customers initially visiting for concrete or mortar and subsequently purchasing a wide range of other materials. This has led to a huge increase in sales of associated products like geotextiles, surface drainage, block paving, and ductile manhole covers.
Furthermore, the machine has been instrumental in bringing in numerous new accounts, serving as a perfect pretext for the sales team to initiate conversations, proactively engage with customers about their projects, and explore further sales opportunities.
For JTD Building Supplies, the fibo Collect machine has been more than just a piece of equipment; it has been a catalyst for growth, efficiency, and enhanced customer relationships. The past year stands as a testament to how fibo Intercon’s innovative solutions can transform traditional builders merchants, delivering significant and sustained business success.
