The Problem

The hydration process in concrete curing slows down in cold weather. The recommendation is to stop production of concrete on a falling thermometer below +5 degrees centigrade.

Below zero degrees centigrade the water in the concrete mix will freeze, and the concrete will not hydrate.

So how can you mix concrete in cold weather conditions below – 40 degrees centigrade?

There are two core issues. Mixing the concrete and placing the concrete.


The Solution

The solution is to ensure the concrete does not freeze during the hydration period. The concrete is mixed in an insulated cabin where the aggregates and water are kept above freezing.

A boiler drives hot air over the sand and stone before mixing. The water is heated to + 20 degrees centigrade and added to the mix. The concrete is them mixed and dispatched through an insulated conveyor.

The concrete is transported to the work area for placing in insulated formwork and covered with insulation.

Cold Weather Concrete Batching Plant

Fibo has built several cold weather batching plants over the year in Siberia, Russia and Greenland. The semi-mobile winter plant mixes concrete at temperatures as low as minus 40 °C without compromising
on quality and performance.

The plant doses more than 100 kg/sec, and produces 1100-1200 litres of concrete per batch. This makes it one of the most efficient plants on the market.

The plant is insulated with plates with 100 mm PU insulation and is connected to an external steam generator. The steam generator heats up the pan mixer and the aggregates in the hoppers to 70 degrees and keeps a constant temperature in the cabin. The plant has an integrated service corridor, coupled with the possibility of supervising all processes from inside means that the staff only rarely has to go outside.

The winter plant is built on a robust steel frame, which allows it to be transported frequently, even over vast distances and on poor roads. The winter plant is also designed for areas with limited access to raw materials and is, therefore, able to use clean water from, for instance freshwater lakes.

The standard winter plant is delivered with an 1800 litre pan mixer, a 1500 litre water tank, two additive pumps, an air compressor, a high-pressure cleaner and a pipe system for steam. It is also prepared for connection to a power generator, additional hoppers for aggregates, cement silos etc.

Our winter plant is a profitable investment which will soon pay for itself and return a profit. All wearing parts are produced in robust materials and can be replaced separately with the use of common tools like screwdrivers and adjustable spanners. There is free access to all of the plant functions, facilitating daily cleaning, maintenance and service.

The winter plant can be combined with a 14 M belt conveyor covered with module-built 60 MM PU insulating plates. A calorifier blows heated air along the belt conveyor to prevent the concrete from hardening.

The winter plant can also be combined with our vertical cement silos, which are fully equipped with cement auger, top hatch and railing.
